Established in 1975, Maaleh Adumim is a
beautiful, clean city, located just outside
Jerusalem. As of 2005, the city population
includes approximately 32,000 people, most of
whom work in Jerusalem and the surrounding
areas. The city boasts several schools, a
community center, sports complexes, a public
library, full range of emergency services
including ambulance, fire and police, and much
more. Maaleh Adumim was given the
status of a "city" in 1991.
It is divided into
different neighborhoods,
each having a character and
theme of its own. These
include:
-
Mitzpeh Nevo
- Klei Shir
- Nofei HaSela (07)
- HaMetzadim
- HaNehalim
- Avnei HaHoshen
- Megadim
- Massuah
- Tsemah haSadeh (06)
In each neighborhood, the
streets are named according
to the neighborhood's name.
For example, HaNehalim (The
Rivers) includes streets
named after several rivers
in Israel. The Klei Shir
(Tools of Song) section
includes streets named after
several musical instruments.
Ma’aleh Adumim is located on the periphery of
the Judean Desert, surrounded by exquisite
panoramic views. To the north and west are the
hills of Jerusalem, including Mount Scopus and
the Mount of Olives. The view toward the east
and south is of the tranquil hills of the Judean
Desert. The planners of Ma’aleh Adumim were
evidently keenly aware of the challenges in
building a city atop a hill with beautiful views
and an ecologically sensitive environment.
Houses are mostly built low, facing scenic
landscapes.
Ma’aleh Adumim places tremendous emphasis on
beautifying its public spaces. The city
maintains over 1,100 dunams of green areas
including dozens of playgrounds, and carefully
designed and maintained traffic circles. Many of
these circles include old olive trees, some
include outdoor sculptures.
In recognition of its efforts, Ma’aleh Adumim
won the Beauty and Environmental Quality award
given by the Council for a Beautiful Israel.
